Paul Kinney is an amazing coach. He takes the time to really know his athletes and tailors their training programs to fit their schedules and goals. He genuinely cares and always makes sure that everyone is ready to complete or compete in their events so they can feel that sense of accomplishment after months of training. On the surface he is kind, sincere and soft spoken, but inside he’s a fierce competitor and he has incredible mental toughness. It’s this inner strength that drives me to work as hard as my body will let me because Paul is always watching. His knowledge of triathlon training is extensive and he leverages technology to help his athletes train smarter and track their progress. In 2011, he coached me through my first two marathons, three triathlons, Death Ride, full AquaBike, and Ironman Canada…all them personal bests. I’m convinced he can help me achieve my goals for two Ironmans in 2012.

Paul coached me to personal records at every distance race, including Ironman Canada in 11:21. Paul helped me identify my goals and then crafted a training plan for success. He dramatically improved my technique, nutrition plan and race strategy. He also helped me overcome a nagging injury and avoid new ones. Paul is a phenomenal teacher, athlete and person.

I met Coach Paul a few years ago before I had ever done a triathlon. While almost a couch potato at the time, he encouraged me and taught me how to do long distance triathlons. He is easy going, knowledgeable about the sport, and is a highly ranked triathlete on his own accord. Paul's workouts are fun, challenging, and effective. His advice on how to approach races is invaluable. I've gone from that couch to competing in five National Championships and representing Team USA in World Championships in Germany, Hungary and the US. I won the 2010 Aquathlon National Championship in my age group and am currently ranked #1 for 2011. Recently, I came in 3rd at the Big Kahuna, 4th at the National and 7th in the Long Course Triathlon World Championships. Paul and I have discussed a strategy for how I can make it to the podium in 2012 World Champs in Vitoria, Spain. Whether I do or not isn't important. It's all fun and quite an adventure!

I truly believe that you can do anything you want as long as you set your mind to it. 2.5 years ago I remember sitting on the couch watching the KONA IM Championships in awe, wondering if & how the athletes actually changed their clothes for each sport. With the help of Paul Kinney, I successfully finished my first full Iron Man in Penticton, BC August 2011 in 16 hours. On race day I was fully prepared, physically, mentally and emotionally for the challenge of a life time. It was one of the best days of my life. His individual training plan incorporated with group workouts guaranteed my success. My fitness has increased 15% with his help in 2011. His guidance helped me balance work, workouts, nutrition & my personal life efficiently. I had an amazing, life changing experience, transforming into a Triathlete. I am hooked. I am an Ironwoman. Thank you Coach Paul for changing my life.

I can't say enough about coach Paul!  He is very knowledgeable in all aspects of multi-sport.  With his excellent guidance I was able to complete my first 70.3 event (Oceanside 70.3) in 5 hours and 10 minutes!  I went on to complete two more long-course events and 3 Olympic distance races in 2010.  Coach Paul is very approachable and welcomes feedback...what is working...what doesn't seem to work, etc.  He was always willing to fine-tune my workouts to accomodate my busy work and travel schedule.  I highly recommend coach Paul and am looking forward to another great season of racing long-course and Olympic distance events.

Paul Kinney is great coach and a great person.  Paul's influences extend beyond just that of a coach.  He carries himself as a great person seeking to positively affect the world around him.  Paul's program and personality understands the stresses of personal life and work.  He creates structure without adding stress to your life. When I first joined Paul, I had damaged my knee from over training.  At that time I could not successfully finish a cat 3 road race or even think of being competitive in an Olympic Triathlon.   Within 3 months, Paul had my fitness back to winning cat 3 road races.  I placed 3rd in Stage 1 of the Elkhorn Stage Race (cat 3).  At the same time I was building my triathlon abilities (running and swimming) to a competitive level.  At the end of my first season with Paul, I upgraded to a cat 2 road racer, and placed in the top ten of my age category at the Pacific Grove Triathlon even after getting a flat during the bike stage. Paul and I have continued to build on last year’s success and step into the highly competitive cat 1/2 field.  I have found success this year placing 3 times in the top ten in 1/2 races; exceeding my goals racing in the new category.  I also placed 3rd in the G.C. in the Steamboat Springs Stage Race (35+ open).  It took a lot of work and trust in Paul, but the results have come.  Paul has guided me to see what I'm capable of allowing me to perform at an elite level.  I can't say enough thanks to Paul.

Paul has taken me from never having completed an endurance event in 2008 to completing 11 such races in 2010, culminating with a full 140.6 mile Ironman. He really works with you and your schedule on a weekly basis to maximize your training effectiveness and ensure you are not just physically prepared for raceday, but prepared mentally and nutritionally as well. Can't recommend Paul enough!

I had a crazy notion that I wanted to complete an Ironman distance triathlon.  I had worked with Coach Paul for a season of Team In Training and knew then what a knowledgable and dedicated coach he was.  I successfully completed  the Wildflower Olympic and the Escape from Alcatraz triathlons that season.  When I heard Paul was independently coaching, there was no hesitation in choosing the perfect coach to get me to the finish line.  I have three children ( the youngest was one year old) when I first met with Paul to discuss whether an Ironman was even a good idea.  We met for a few hours to discuss every aspect of what he would provide and what I would need to do to make this possible.  Paul focuses on quality vs. quantity.  He eliminates the "fluff" out of workouts, so I never felt like I was training just to fill in time.  As a mom of three with a husband who travels 3 weeks a month, I have no time for fluff!  I had encountered some problems with my race nutrition and was beginning to think an Ironman was going to be impossible.  Paul kept working with me, and I am proud to say I completed the Vineman Triathlon with no stomach issues, very little soreness, and crossed the finish line with a huge smile.  It was honestly the best race I have ever done. Thanks to Paul's professionalism, extreme knowledge and encouragement, I am now and Ironmom!  Paul is an amazing coach and I will continue to use his services to improve even more.

Since working with Paul he has taught me the importance of maximizing my time and my workouts to be the best triathlete I can be. I always used to workout constantly, thinking it would help my training. His planning has not only help me balance my triathlon/personal life, but I've started placing in small races, something I never thought I would be able to do! I've become a better and much faster runner and swimmer and look forward to successfully completing my 1st half ironman. Paul is compassionate, intelligent and 200% knowledgeable in the sport of triathlon. Believe it or not.....I was able to accomplish all of this while I've lived across the country! Paul is always there to answer my questions, encourage me and be a great friend and mentor.
