Ironman Training

Without a doubt, Ironman is one of the most difficult one-day endurance events on the planet.  2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles on the bike, then you get the treat of running a 26.2 mile marathon...all in one day.  Actually, all 140.6 miles are to be completed within 17 hours to be an official finisher.  Many people would never even consider attempting and Ironman, but for those who do, taking their training seriously is a must.  Do you want to take on this task alone?  A properly structured 6-12 month training program can be the difference between finishing strong or not finishing at all.  Let Kinney Multisport be your partner in conquering Ironman.

We begin your Ironman training with you filling out an athlete questionnaire followed by a comprehensive initial consultation.  Ideally, this consultation will be done in person, but can easily be done via phone for those living outside the San Francisco Bay Area.  The content of the questionnaire is discussed in detail to determine what your sport specific limiters are that need to be addressed first in building your customized training plan.  A non-invasive, cycling lactate threshold heart rate/power test is also conducted to determine your training zones.  For athletes outside the Greater S.F. Bay Area, you will be giving detailed instructions for cycling and running field tests for determining your ideal heart rate training zones.  Your coach then generates your training based upon your available time to commit to training each week.  Communication between the athlete and coach is highly encouraged because the results from your past trainings and any performance testing has a direct impact upon what trainings are prescribed in the future.  For this reason, your Ironman training program offers unlimited phone and email contact with your coach.  The more contact you have with your coach, the more focused your trainings become, resulting in less time wasted doing unnecessary workouts.  The other advantage to this coaching philosophy is that you have more time available to spend on the important things in life such as family, friends, other interests and work related obligations.  Kinney Multisport offers both individual coaching for any Ironman event worldwide and group coaching for select North American events.
